Pick a norm, enter the average rating of your opponents and the number of rounds — the calculator inverts the official FIDE performance table and gives the minimum score you need.
How the required score is calculated
FIDE measures a norm by tournament performance:
Rp = Ra + dp
where Ra is the average rating of your opponents (rounded to a whole number, 0.5 upward) and dp comes from your percentage score via the handbook conversion table (percentages are also rounded, 0.5% upward). The calculator finds the smallest score whose dp lifts Ra to the required performance. Two hard limits apply regardless of the arithmetic: the score must be at least 35%, and the field must meet the minimum average rating below.

For the average, at most one opponent's rating may be raised to the floor in the last column; other unrated opponents count as 1400.

What else a norm requires
This calculator covers the performance requirement. A valid norm must also satisfy the field conditions from the FIDE title regulations:
- At least 9 games (a few elite events — World Cup, Olympiad — count with 7–8).
- At least half of your opponents must hold FIDE titles; for a GM norm at least 1/3 of them (minimum 3) must be GMs, for an IM norm IMs or GMs, and likewise for the women's norms.
- Federation mix: at most 3/5 of opponents from your own federation and at most 2/3 from any single federation.
- The title itself then needs three norms over at least 27 games in total, plus the rating from the table below.

The rating may be reached at any point, but thresholds reached from 2024 onward must be backed by at least 30 rated games.
Frequently asked questions
What score do I need for a GM norm in a 9-round open?
Against the minimum allowed field (average rating 2380) you need 7/9 — a 78% score and a 2600 performance. Stronger opposition lowers the bar: against a 2500 average, 6/9 is enough.
Does my own rating matter for a norm?
No. A norm only looks at your score and your opponents' ratings and titles. Your own rating matters separately: the GM title requires reaching 2500 at some point, on top of three norms. Use the performance rating calculator to check a finished tournament.
Why is no norm possible in a weak field?
FIDE sets a minimum average opponent rating for each norm — 2380 for GM, 2230 for IM. If the field is below that, even a perfect score does not count as a norm.
Which titles need no norms at all?
FM, CM, WFM and WCM are awarded on rating alone — 2300, 2200, 2100 and 2000 respectively, no norms required. FIDE also grants titles directly for certain results in designated events such as continental and world championships. Only GM, IM, WGM and WIM normally go through the three-norm route this calculator covers.
