How the estimate works
Against opposition of your own strength, the Elo system pays on average:
points per game = K × (S − 0.5)
where S is your score per game (0.55 for 55%). The number of games is the rating gap divided by that pace. Score exactly 50% and you stay where you are — which is why the calculator asks for more than 50%. The estimate is deliberately simple and a bit optimistic: as you climb, the same opposition becomes relatively weaker, expected scores rise, and each win pays less. Treat the result as a lower bound.

Frequently asked questions
What score percentage should I use?
For a player who is genuinely improving, 55–60% against similarly rated opposition is realistic. 65% or more is a strong assumption — if you score that much for long, your rating catches up quickly and the pace slows. Check what a single game pays with the Elo change calculator.
Why is the estimate optimistic?
The calculator assumes you keep scoring the same percentage all the way up. In reality, as your rating grows the same opposition becomes relatively weaker for you, your expected score rises, and each win pays fewer points — so the climb usually takes more games than the estimate.
Which K-factor am I on?
K = 40 applies to new players until they have played 30 rated games, and to juniors under 18 while rated below 2300. K = 20 is the standard factor below 2400. K = 10 applies once a player's published rating has ever reached 2400.
